Cytogenetics Technologist.
Serve as Cytogenetics Technologist 2 in The Ohio State University, Comprehensive Cancer Center, James Cancer Hospital Cytogenetics Laboratory, Columbus, Ohio.
Duties:
Work under the direction and supervision of the Lab Manager and Technical Directors to examine blood, bone marrow and solid tumor specimens from cancer patients for chromosomal changes using high resolution microscopes and a digital imaging system; complete chromosomal analysis and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis; processing, clerical, and other general laboratory duties related to specimen processing and provision of preliminary test results and assistance to physicians and nursing staff; attend in-service and continuing education; obtain American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Technologist in Cytogenetics (CG) within two years of hire or ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLT) certification within one year of hire.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Cytogenetics, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, or other biological science (foreign equivalents acceptable); eligible for American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Technologist in Cytogenetics (CG) certification or ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLT) certification; requires successful completion of a background check.
The Cytogenetics Laboratory provides Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) and Chromosome analysis on inpatient and outpatient specimens received from the OSUMC and other local and state hospitals and physicians. The Cytogenetics Technologist position responsibilities include performing complete chromosomal analysis and/or FISH analysis using high resolution microscopes and a digital imaging system. These procedures are used to examine blood, bone marrow and solid tumor specimens for chromosomal changes. The Cytogenetics Laboratory is staffed 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. weekdays and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Hours may vary according to workflow and holidays.
Position Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the Lab Manager, Lead Technologists, and Division Director the Cytogenetics Technologist is responsible for complete chromosomal analysis and/or FISH analysis in addition to clerical and processing procedures leading up to final analysis.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with MT (ASCP) certification or Bachelor's degree in a certified cytogenetics degree program or a Bachelor's degree in a biological science. Post-degree experience in a cytogenetics lab setting and experience in cancer cytogenetic analysis desired. Certification as CG (ASCP) required within 2 years of start date.
Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post offer process.
