Summary Description

This position performs work in the area of planning, training, and administrative support assisting with ongoing Emergency Management efforts. The internship is designed to be both educational and practical applying skills acquired in school to a professional setting while receiving exposure and experience in a wide array of Emergency Management areas. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator. The primary place of work will be the Story County Emergency Management Offices at 900 6th Street, Nevada, IA.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Participates in various research projects and/or special projects as assigned.
  • Assists with the creation, maintenance and organization of databases and data management systems.
  • Assists with the development of plans, training and exercises.
  • Assists with execution of daily emergency management administrative duties.
  • Assists with other emergency management related projects.
  • Conducts coordination and communication with outside and partner organizations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Approximately 20 hours per week within the Story County Emergency Management office desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Knowledge of emergency communications principles.
  • Knowledge of database applications and data management concepts.
  • Skill in researching and analyzing data.
  • Skill in preparing reports.
  • Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs including Microsoft 365.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with college coursework in Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, Data Science, Database Management Systems, Public Administration or related field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

Physical & Environmental Characteristics

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light (24 pounds or less) objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office.
