Description

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

The Intern, Detail Planning will support the planning and coordination of complex shipbuilding activities, helping transform engineering designs into executable production work packages. Working closely with the Detail Planning team, you’ll review technical drawings, 3D models, and Bills of Materials while assisting in sequencing work, implementing engineering changes, and maintaining critical planning data across systems like Jira and ERP. This hands-on opportunity is ideal for engineering students looking to build real-world experience in manufacturing and ship construction. 

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you’ll do

  • Review and interpret technical drawings, 3D models, and Bills of Materials to develop and maintain production work packages.
  • Understand production schedules and sequence work within planned activity windows.
  • Support the implementation and tracking of engineering changes.
  • Review and maintain planning data in Jira, ERP, and configuration management system.
  • Assist with maintaining planning trackers, reports, and dashboards.
  • Liaise with Engineering, Operations, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

What you’ll bring

  • Enrollment in a 2nd or 3rd year degree in engineering (mechanical, manufacturing, or a related field).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Experience with ERP software is considered an asset.
  • Basic working knowledge of CAD software.
  • Previous experience or coursework related to manufacturing, shipbuilding, or industrial engineering is preferred.
  • Knowledge of inventory and material management practices.

  • Knowledge of production planning and control concepts.

  • Basic understanding of mechanical and piping systems and components.

  • Interest in shipbuilding or manufacturing industries.

  • Understanding of change managements principles.

  • Ability to work well independently with limited direction and in a team environment.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Effective time management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking to improve production processes.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $28.00/hour.

Start Date of Internship: Tuesday, September 8th, 2026.  
End Date of Internship: Friday, April 30th, 2027 (8-Months).
