What This Job Entails:
The Lab Networking Field Service Technician plays a hands-on role supporting enterprise lab network infrastructure across multiple lab sites in the Bay Area. This technician is responsible for hardware installation, cabling, equipment relocation, on-site troubleshooting, and documenting work performed across lab environments. You’ll work closely with cross-functional engineering teams and act as the on-site presence for the broader infrastructure and networking team.

Scope of Work:

  • Support complex, evolving network environments within Engineering Lab spaces (not traditional data centers)

  • Travel between buildings and labs across the Bay Area based on daily task requirements

  • Work with cross-functional engineering, operations, and remote infrastructure teams to support lab network deployments, changes, and ongoing needs

  • Represent the team as the on-site point of contact for lab users needing networking or infrastructure support

  • Prioritize customer service and flexibility in dynamic lab environments

  • Work with moderate supervision while following SOPs and established processes

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Install, move, and decommission lab networking equipment, including switches, servers, racks, cabling, and cable management infrastructure

  • Complete onsite surveys to identify network deployment requirements and physical constraints (e.g. rack space, power, cabling paths)

  • Accurately label and document lab assets including devices and cabling

  • Perform structured copper and fiber cabling per design specs and SOPs

  • Update and manage tasks using a standard ticketing system (e.g. Jira, ServiceNow), maintaining clear communication and timely updates

  • Act as Smart Hands support for remote teams—assisting with tasks such as device reboots, cable swaps, visual inspections, and basic diagnostics

  • Follow all lab access, safety, and security procedures

  • Support other lab infrastructure needs as required (patching, audits, inventory checks, cable cleanup, etc.)

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to troubleshoot connectivity or hardware-related issues in lab spaces

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED with 2–5 years of hands-on experience in networking, infrastructure, or lab support roles

  • Proven ability to follow documented procedures and adapt to new assignments with minimal supervision

  • Strong communication and customer service skills — ability to work directly with engineers and respond to urgent needs

  • Experience installing and cabling networking equipment (CAT5e, CAT6, fiber: SM/MM)

  • Knowledge of copper/fiber test equipment and cable standards

  • Understanding of basic networking concepts and enterprise infrastructure

  • Comfortable using ticketing systems and documenting work

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools and email communication

  • Able to physically lift 50 lbs, move between buildings, and work in standing or crouched positions as needed

  • Must have reliable transportation for local travel between lab sites in the Bay Area

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FOA (Fiber Optic Association) Infrastructure Certification

  • CompTIA Network+ Certification

  • CCNA or equivalent networking certification

  • Certifications related to network infrastructure, structured cabling, or field tech services

  • Experience supporting lab environments or office networking deployments

  • Familiarity with remote collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom, Slack) and network troubleshooting software

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Must be comfortable working in dynamic lab environments with frequent movement between sites

  • Physical tasks include racking gear, moving equipment, and running cabling under or behind lab benches

  • Occasional repetitive hand and wrist movement

  • Position may require occasional extended hours or short-notice on-site support
