Description

The purpose of the student internship/temporary position is to provide opportunities for college students to gain experience in the field of Solid Waste, Recycling Education, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering. This hands-on position offers exposure to both the technical and public-facing sides of solid waste management. The intern will assist in community engagement efforts, data management, field sampling, and other operational tasks at the landfill and transfer station. This is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates interested in environmental science, public works, engineering, sustainability, or communications.

Key Responsibilities:

Recycling Outreach & Education:

  • Assist in developing, planning, and executing recycling outreach and education programs.
  • Support creation of educational materials such as flyers, presentations, social media posts, and videos.
  • Participate in school presentations, community workshops, public events, and facility tours.
  • Interact with the public to promote proper recycling habits and answer recycling-related questions.

Data Management & Reporting:

  • Help collect, organize, and analyze program data for internal reporting and grant tracking.
  • Assist with data entry and database maintenance related to waste diversion, participation metrics, and outreach outcomes.

Landfill & Field Operations:

  • Assist with general field work at the landfill and transfer station, including facility inspections and monitoring tasks.
  • Conduct or support lab sampling and basic environmental testing (leachate, stormwater, etc.) under supervision.
  • Help maintain accurate records related to field and lab work.
  • Support special projects related to waste diversion, site safety, and environmental compliance.
  • Investigation of project sites and incidents (such as illegal dumping, environmental complaints, small quantity generator follow up) 


Supports strategic plan for the Division of Solid Waste Management.


Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.


Additional Duties:

In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled, with at least two years completed, in a higher education organization (university, college, or technical institute). 


A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Additional Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.


Must be able to compose effective and accurate correspondence. Must possess the ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers and at all levels of the organization. Must be skilled in written and verbal communication

Must be willing to get wet, dirty, muddy, and to work in all weather conditions.


Must be able to lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials (over 20 lbs.)


Must be comfortable leading and speaking in front of large groups.


Must have experience in Microsoft Office software such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word and other various software for program staff support.

All employees must attend Seminole County Required Trainings.

Department Specific trainings per position may be required.
