Job Description:

Sun Life is dedicated to leading the transition towards a low-carbon economy and ensuring both resiliency and sustainability within our operations. We have established an ambitious long-term target to achieve NetZero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in alignment with the global warming limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, emerging climate regulations and guidelines for global financial institutions, such as OSFI Guideline B-15: Climate Risk Management, necessitate rigorous data measurement and decarbonization efforts within the organization. This position presents a significant opportunity to contribute to a growing initiative aimed at researching, innovating, and implementing data-driven solutions to support sustainability objectives.

The Sustainability Data Analyst will report to the Sustainability Program Manager within Sun Life's Corporate Real Estate (CRE) team. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a passionate individual to contribute to the enhancement of a data analytics program within the sustainability field.  In this position, you'll have the chance to strengthen your analytical, technical, and problem-solving abilities as you support Sun Life’s sustainability initiatives within a corporate real estate portfolio.

The Sustainability Data Analyst will manage the collection of sustainability data and handle reporting, metrics, and dashboard creation derived from this data. The analyst will deliver analyses, independently and collaboratively, to present findings, develop internal and external reports, and provide evidence to support sustainable proposals or implementation strategies. Additionally, the role involves liaising with partners and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to achieve common sustainability goals. The position may also require conducting market research or investigations on sustainability topics pertinent to large financial institutions, ensuring current efforts are up-to-date or adapting existing processes as necessary.

What will you do?

  • Strategic Data Governance & Compliance: Support the end-to-end sustainability data lifecycle by transforming unstructured inputs into audit-ready datasets. Ensure all data quality assurance processes align with internal controls and external regulatory requirements, including TCFD, GRI, and OSFI.

  • Data Infrastructure & Tool Architecture: Design and build scalable, Excel-based tools using advanced formulas, VBA macros, and standardized templates to shift the team from manual entry toward high-efficiency, high-accuracy data processing.

  • Process Automation & Digital Enablement: Act as the primary bridge between sustainability and corporate technology teams. Interrogate existing workflows to implement automated solutions via Power Automate and the Power Platform and other tools, effectively eliminating operational bottlenecks.

  • Advanced Analytics & Dashboarding: Develop and maintain forward-looking dashboards using Tableau (or similar BI tools) to translate complex sustainability metrics into actionable insights for senior leadership and strategic decision-making.

  • Sustainability Performance Monitoring: Build and manage specialized tracking tools for Corporate Real Estate (CRE) sustainability programs, specifically focusing on energy conservation initiatives, decarbonization projects, and waste management programs.

  • Technical Reporting & Disclosure: Conduct comprehensive data collection and interrogation to prepare findings reports. Maintain accountability for the performance narrative in both internal progress updates and external ESG disclosures.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Digital Automation & Workflow Design: Proficient in building and maintaining Excel Macros, VBA, and Power Automate workflows to eliminate manual bottlenecks and scale data processes.

  • AI-Enhanced Analytics & BI: Skilled in using Tableau and Generative AI tools to interrogate, clean, and reconcile complex sustainability datasets into strategic performance narratives.

  • Data Integrity & Analytical Rigor: Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to provide high-level human oversight, ensuring that all automated or AI-generated outputs are accurate and audit-ready.

  • Sustainability Literacy: Functional understanding of sustainability topics relevant to financial institutions, including GHG reporting, climate risk, and decarbonization strategies.

Preferred skills

  • Degree in sustainability, computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum three (3) years in data analytics or business intelligence or sustainability.

  • Proficient in building Excel Macros, VBA programs, and Power Automate workflows; skilled in Tableau or similar BI tools.

  • Attention to detail, strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Confident communication and presentation skills

  • Innovative and adaptable in a fast-paced environment with multiple, evolving priorities and tight deadlines.

What's in it for you?

  • The opportunity to move along a variety of career paths with amazing networking potential

  • Flexible Benefits from the day you join to meet the needs of you and your family

  • We’re committed to creating an inclusive and respectful environment. Our goal is to make sure all our employees have the chance to live up to their full potential
