Position Title: Associate Java Developer
Location: Hybrid (2–3 days per week) / Onsite (Sprezzatura HQ Arlington, VA)

POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking an Associate Developer to support software development, sustainment, and modernization efforts for systems supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This role is ideal for an early-career software developer who is eager to learn enterprise application development and work within a complex federal healthcare environment.
The Associate Developer will support both legacy Java-based applications and modernization initiatives, working alongside senior engineers to implement enhancements, resolve defects, develop integrations, and support modernization activities. The primary focus of this role will be supporting existing enterprise applications while gaining exposure to modern cloud-native and microservices architecture.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support development, testing, and maintenance of enterprise Java applications
• Assist with analysis and remediation of software defects and production issues
• Support enhancements to legacy applications utilizing Java, Spring Framework, Struts, JSP, WebLogic, Oracle, and related technologies
• Develop and maintain REST and SOAP-based integrations
• Participate in modernization efforts utilizing Java 17, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices
• Support database development activities involving Oracle databases and SQL queries
• Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and collaborate with developers, testers, product owners, and stakeholders
• Create and maintain technical documentation
• Support code reviews, testing activities, and deployment processes
• Learn and apply software engineering best practices, coding standards, and security requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 1–3 years of software development experience
• Experience with Java development
• Familiarity with SQL and relational databases
• Familiarity with web services, REST APIs, or application integrations
• Understanding of object-oriented programming concepts
• Experience working within Agile development environments
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with Spring Framework or Spring Boot
• Experience with Oracle databases
• Familiarity with Git version control
• Familiarity with JavaScript, HTML, and web application development
• Experience supporting federal or healthcare systems
• Exposure to React or modern front-end frameworks
WORKING CONDITIONS
Standard Business hours are Monday through Friday. Occasional extended or weekend hours may be required based on operational needs. Must have reliable internet service that allows for effective telecommuting.
