Schedule: 10–15 hours per week (flexible)

Duration: 6 or 12 months
Location: Hybrid / On-site as needed
Compensation: Unpaid internship for academic credit and/or practicum hours


About the Internship

Volunteers of America Eastern Washington & Northern Idaho (VOA) is offering a structured, unpaid Human Resources internship designed for students or early-career professionals seeking meaningful, hands-on learning in nonprofit HR.

This internship is a learning-focused opportunity, not a replacement for paid staff. Interns are supported through direct supervision, clear learning objectives, and exposure to real HR operations in a mission-driven organization serving our community.


What You’ll Learn

As an HR Intern, you’ll gain practical experience in:

  • Nonprofit human resources operations
  • Recruitment and onboarding processes
  • HR compliance and documentation
  • Training coordination and employee engagement
  • Professional communication, confidentiality, and ethical HR practices
     

This role is ideal for someone looking to build a strong foundation in HR while contributing to a people-centered organization.


What You’ll Do

Responsibilities may vary based on academic requirements and internship length, and may include:


Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Assist with job postings and applicant tracking
  • Support interview scheduling and candidate communications
  • Help prepare onboarding materials and observe orientation sessions
     

HR Operations & Compliance

  • Assist with maintaining HR documentation under supervision
  • Support compliance tracking and audit preparation
  • Help update HR templates, forms, and internal resources
     

Training & Engagement

  • Assist with training coordination and tracking
  • Support the development of training materials and supervisor tools
  • Participate in employee engagement initiatives
     

Special Projects

  • Support HR projects such as policy updates or process improvement
  • Assist with research, data collection, or benchmarking projects
     

Supervision & Support

  • Ongoing supervision and feedback throughout the internship
  • Clear learning goals established at the start
  • Work reviewed prior to implementation
  • Internship hours are approved based on meeting learning and performance expectations
Requirements

 

Who Should Apply

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field
  • Interest in nonprofit work and people-centered HR practices
  • Strong organizational, communication, and professionalism skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; HR systems exposure is a plus
