Position Title: Initial Teacher Peer Mentor

 

Reports To: Building Principal 

 

Purpose: A peer mentor provides essential support to help new teachers transition into their roles. They offer practical guidance, model best teaching practices, and encourage reflective professional growth. Mentors also provide emotional support, helping new teachers manage stress and integrate into the school community.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience, with the most recent year in the Urbandale Community School District.
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate and support peers in a positive manner.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Mentorship and Guidance: 
    • Meets regularly with mentee to support new teachers in understanding district and building procedures, policies, and expectations.
    • Provide guidance on classroom management, curriculum planning, and instructional practices.
    • Assist in navigating challenges related to the first years of teaching, offering solutions and strategies for success.
  • Modeling Best Practices: 
    • Demonstrate effective teaching strategies and instructional techniques that promote student engagement and achievement.
    • Encourage the use of research-based practices, innovative instructional tools, and technology integration.
    • Provide opportunities for new teachers to observe classroom practices and receive constructive feedback.
  • Professional Growth and Reflection:
    • Facilitate reflective conversations, encouraging new teachers to assess and grow in their instructional practices.
    • Promote continuous professional development by guiding teachers toward available resources and learning opportunities.
    • Support goal setting and self-assessment aligned with professional standards and personal growth plans.
    • Attends New Teacher Academy and Beginning Teacher Learning Community sessions with mentee.
  • Emotional and Social Support: 
    • Provide a safe space for new teachers to express concerns, challenges, and successes.
    • Assist in managing the stress and demands of the teaching profession.
    • Help new teachers build connections with colleagues and become active members of the school community.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with building administrators, induction coaches, and other support staff to align mentoring efforts with school and district goals.
    • Maintain consistent communication with mentees, offering timely feedback and support throughout the school year.

Additional Time:

Year 1: 3 days and weekly collaboration with mentee

Year 2: Weekly collaboration with mentee

Stipend: $1,500

This is the anticipated general amount of time, but it is not limited, as the stipend is for additional leadership responsibilities. These responsibilities may require additional time beyond the stated expectations to ensure successful completion.
